Introduction

See the background information on the first noise page. Unlike the first study, shutter speeds here are more ordinary, beginning at 3/4 second at ISO 50 and ending at 1/160 second at ISO HI 2 (6400).

Examples on this page were processed in Capture NX 2 using low-contrast Neutral and a white balance of 5000K, with noise reduction off. The use of Neutral is best for evaluating noise, because most other processing modes introduce a tonal curve which masks noise in the dark areas. The crops will look soft because of low contrast, minimal sharpening, use of f/11 and a crop that is not in the optimal zone of sharp focus.
